Magic Square

The Magic Square question type assesses number sense, algebraic reasoning, and systematic problem-solving. Learners fill in a grid so that every row, column, and diagonal sums to a target value — a task that requires critical thinking about how numbers interact, not rote calculation.

Aligns well with modern math curriculum's emphasis on mathematical reasoning and number relationships. Responses are automatically scored with partial credit and cell-level diagnostic feedback.

The Scoring Challenge We've Solved

A magic square has multiple valid solutions — rotations and reflections of the same arrangement are all correct. Our automatic scoring handles this complexity:

  • Partial credit — Each cell is scored independently, giving learners credit for what they got right
  • All valid orientations — Recognizes rotations and reflections as correct solutions
  • Cell-level diagnostics — Identifies exactly which cells need correction

Note: The magic square question type can be set to provide immediate feedback (as in this demo), delayed feedback through a "Check Answer" button, or no feedback for summative use cases.
